good morning. we're going to begin with the federal investigation into the minneapolis police department after former officer derek chauvin was convicted of murdering george floyd. the justice department will help determine if there's a larger pattern of excessive force and discrimination by officers. all this comes as chauvin sits in a maximum security prison where he will stay until he's sentenced in eight weeks. laura podesta is tracking the latest developments from new york. laura, good morning. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie.usti depart investigatiolliky nneapolis po darent such as changes to trainin but lthathis ll te a year or longer. just one day after former police officer derek chauvin was found guilty in the death of george

floyd, the department of justice announced an investigation into the minneapolis police department. the u.s. attorney general says it will look into whether the minneapolis pd engages in unlawful policing and discrimination. >> the challenges we face are deeply woven into our history. they did not arise today or last year. building trust between community and law enforcement will take time. >> reporter: as people continue to flock to the site where george floyd took his last breaths, there is renewed pressure on lawmakers to reach a deal on police research. they're hoping to hammer it out by the one-year anniversary of george floyd's death. >> maybe intne happenedo stop what happened to duante wright. >> reporter: wright was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in nearby brooklyn center, minnesota. the officer who pulled the trigger allegedly mistook her pistol for her taser.

mourners could be seen at a wake for the 20-year-old yesterday ahead of his funeral today. in an interview on "cbs this morning," one of george floyd's brothers spoke about reaching out to the wright family following the shooting. >> this is a fraternity that i didn't ask to be in, and unfortunately you have a lot of families they need counseling, they need somebody to get out and speak for them. >> reporter: the floyd family says they will attend wright's funeral. reverend al sharpton will deliver the eulogy. and the reverend sharpton said that in his remarks today he will remind those in attendance that the fight for justice did not end with the derek chauvin verdict. and that the duante wright case is round two. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york. thank you so much. minnesota's attorney general, keith ellison, is speaking about chauvin's guilty verdict. he sat down with scott pelley for "60 minutes."

>> reporter: columbus, ohio, officials have released new body camera video showing the moments leading up to ma'khia bryant's death. >> what's going on? >> reporter: in the footage, the 16-year-old appears to be holding a knife as she chases someone. another girl falls to the ground before four shots ring out. >> the video shows that there is more to this. it requires us to pause, take a close look at the sequence of events, and though it's not easy, wait for the facts. >> he attacked a baby. >> reporter: the officers were responding to a 911 caller who said someone was trying to stab them. >> over here trying to fight us. trying to stab us. >> reporter: officers performed cpr, but bryant died a short time later. [ chants ] the shooting prompted protests in columbus and beyond with many demonstrators questioning the use of lethal force to break up a fight. >> bci will determine if the officer involved was wrong.and h

we'll have to wait an extra day for the next launch of a spacex rocket carrying astronauts to the international space station. it is now set to blast off tomorrow morning from florida's kennedy space center. it was supposed to launch this morning but was delayed due to bad weather in the atlantic ocean. the crew dragon capsule will carry four astronauts including two americans. it's the first time both the crew capsule and the rocket booster are being reused to fly people. dozens of vehicles were involved in a deadly pileup in wisconsin, and there's a new push for statehood for washington, d.c. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." current rules should be extended through september. she said we're still, quote, in the middle of the crisis and should stay the course with mask policies, end quote, to curb the spread of covid-19. the current rule signed by president biden in january is due to expire on may 11th. the biden administration is extending free school lunches for kids across the nation. every student in kindergarten through 12th grade will be able to receive a free meal through the spring of 2022. the program lets families pick up free food from their local school district even if they don't technically qualify for free and reduced price meals. officials say up to 12 million children are currently living in a household where they may not always have enough to eat during the pandemic. your favorite football teams are getting a magical makeover. disney and the nfl teamed up for a collection of shirts blending the league's teams with mickey mouse and iconic characters from the "avengers" and "star wars." each design also incorporates the team colors.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ ♪ the show will go on. cirque du soleil is returning to the stage in las vegas. it will reopen in june and july. they've been closed for more than a year because of the pandemic. several tours are also hitting the road again starting in the dominican republic in november and in london next january.

fans are over the rainbow with the latest round of guest hosts for "jeopardy!". the popular quiz show announced levar burton will help close out season 37. the former reading rainbow host will take over during the week of july 26th. he's at the center of a campaign to become the permanent host of the game show following the death of alex trebek. a petition on change.org has garnered nearly 250,000 signatures since november. other temporary hosts just announced include robin roberts, george stephanopoulos, david faber, and joe buck. fans of the show "i italet yr r" will appy to father." lary duff will sin series on hulu. she plays the main character and narrater who tells her son the story of how she met his father. "how i met your mother" ran for nine seasons on cbs. and there's a new bar in new york city that could be a little hard to find.

and this morning, there's a growing movement to reduce food waste. nancy chen shows us what up cycling is all about. >> reporter: bertha jimenez moved to the united states from ecuador to study mechanical engineering but was soon engineering something else -- flour. and not just any kind. she uses malted barley often thrown out after brewing beer. so best case scenario that would go to animal feed? >> yes. >> reporter: worst case it goes to a landfill. >> yes. >> reporter: jimenez and her new york-based company rise call it super flour. >> that's 12 times the fiber, two times the proteins, one-third of the carbs. it's really delicious. and it's also sustainable. >> reporter: the process is known as upcycling. turner wyatt launched the upcycle food association in 2019. what exactly is upcycled? >> it's a way of taking otherwise wasted food and creating something new and nutritious out of it to prevent food waste. >> reporter: about 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted per year globally.
